April 2010 NOPR Meeting Minutes
Call to Order and Opening Remarks:
The meeting was called to order on April 17, 2010 by Steven Stripp and Gary Vihinen acting for President Hank Samson. There were 16 members present.
Steven stated that the Dungeness Kids Fair would be held Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Carrie Blake Park. He noted that we are allowed two tables. Steve will be there to represent the NOPR.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Steve Stripp stated that the Treasure had $1453.81 cash available with $1212.14 cash in the bank, $41.67 cash on hand, and a $200 donation from an Anonymous Contributor.
Rolling Stock Upgrade Project:
There are 25 car kits to be completed reported Steve Hauff. All are unpainted and unprimed. Steve said he has the cars but needs the wheel sets and couplers. Joe Watkins stated that he has plastic wheels sets which may be suitable. Steve H and Joe will check the sizes. The cars need to be cleaned up with a soft brush and a mild dishwashing detergent. The decision on where the work will take place will be deferred pending space available and the return of President Hank Samson.
Work Party Report:
It was reported that new legs were put on the new module. Leveling the legs still needs to be accomplished. The next work party will be Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Lincoln School in Port Angeles at 9:30 AM.
Web Site:
Chuck Howerton reported that several fixes had been made to the website. Several Pages have been added for the different Scales. The website can be located at: http://www.nop-modelrr.com .
G Gauge Equipment Available:
Contact Fred Grant, 360-683-3194, 792 West Sequim Bay Road. He apparently has Track, Locos, and Cars available.
Cascade Rails Web Site:
The website is up and will list what will happen at the Tacoma Convention.
May 2010 NOPR Meeting:
Charles Aldrich has a DVD that he will bring and Steve Hauff stated that he will bring a lap top computer and a projector.

Treasurer’s report – Income $20 – $247.97 disbursed for DCC equipment, Website and track leaving a balance of $947.57.
Steve Stripp reported the kids railroad program was a success with 75 children in attendance. Thanks to Steve and all of you that participated.
Chuck Howerton reported the club’s website is operational – he will add a section where members can post items they have for sale on the website. Please notify Chuck when the items are sold or withdrawn so he can delete them.
There will be a work party at Lincoln School Friday June 5 – 9am. The DCC system is partially installed and work will continue on that as well as other items. A book and video library at the school has been organized and members can check out items for their use.
Steve Stripp is organizing items for sale at our annual show – any items you may have please get them to Steve.
Lauren is planning on meeting with the Clallam County Fair Director after the work party this Friday to discuss our participation in the fair. Any members wishing to attend should plan to do so.
The Bremerton show is 6/13 at the same location 10- 4 pm.
Several tables have been rented for our show 10-17/18.

The balance in the treasury is $1,175.54.
OLD BUSINESS & NEW BUSINESS:
- There will be a work session on the club modules at Lincoln School April 17 at 9:30am.
- The next meeting will be held at the club house at Lazy Acres April 25. The May meeting will be at the Sequim Library.
- The Bremerton Train Show is 6/13.
- The NOPR website has several photos which have been posted..
- The Railroad Bridge Society event is scheduled for 9/25, 26, 27.
- The club modules will be on display at the Clallam County Fair in the Arts and Crafts Bldg. 8/20-23.Volunteers are needed to man the operation. Chuck Howerton will have his N scale layout if space permits.
- The Kitsp Live Steamers picnic is scheduled for 8/8.
Thanks to Hans Mann for his presentation on how we might proceed on installing DCC on the club modular layout. It was moved, seconded and approved by a voice vote to add DCC to the layout.

OLD BUSINESS & NEW BUSINESS:
- Annual dues of $10 are due and should be paid to Pat Fuery.
- Times will be scheduled at the 3/28 for work sessions at the Lincoln School.
- Hanns will discuss applicability of DCC on the club modules at the 3/28 meeting.
- The Railroad Bridge Society event will be 9/25-26 (open 10-4) same as last year.
- The Sequim Library has pencilled us in to participate in the kids program again at the library.
- Chuck Howerton is setting up a website for the club – should be done in a few months.
- Clallam County Fair representative is to contact Lauren the club modules being set up at the fair in August.
- Lauren will set up a date of 8/8/09 for us to visit the Kitsap Live Steamers.

The balance in the treasury is $984.54.
MEETING ALERT:
The next two or three NOPR monthly meetings will be held in the clubhouse at the Lazy Acres Mobile Home Park on Dryke Rd., just across from the old Lumberman’s on Highway 101 between Sequim and Port Angeles.
OLD BUSINESS & NEW BUSINESS:
- Steve Hauff and Don Gerber will have presentations at the next meeting.
- NOPR dues of $10 are now due.
- Lauren will schedule a time in April to work on the modules. It was suggested that we consider having DCC w/sound on the modules.
- The annual NOPR train show will be October 17 & 18 with set up on October 16.
- There was discussion on having a website for the NOPR.
- Other items discussed were:
- Kitsap Live Steamers will be 8/8 and 8/22, Hank Samson suggested they would have a steam up and BBQ at his place sometime this year.
- The library has penciled in NOPR for a repeat of the children’s program this year.
- Lauren has not heard from the Clallam County Fair regarding NOPR modules at the fair.
- The Dungeness River Society evemt will be the last weekend in September.
- The Puget Sound Garden Railroad Society will be hosting the National G guage meet in Seattle in 2010 – if there is enough interest from our local modelers they will schedule a bus tour of the area, and if anyone would like to have an open house of their layout let Lauren know.

- Thanks to the efforts of Chuck Howerton, Steve Hauff,Lauren Scrafford, Pat Furey, Joe Watkins and Dick Wolf the Boy Scout merit badge event was a success. We may repeat the activitiy next year.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Membership dues for 2009 will be $10.

Meetings for 2009 are scheduled as follows: Jan 31 – Joe Watkins house, March 7 March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 29, September 26, October 31, November 28, Dec – Christmas Party TBA. Other than the January meeting all meetings will be held at the Library. All meetings will start at 3 pm.

This years Christmas party will be December 13, 1-4 pm at Hank and Becky Samson’s house 81 Valley Heights Drive. Their phone number is 683-5729. You can reach their house by taking Taylor Cut-off Road from Hwy 101 south just past Lost Mtn Road and left past a barn on the right to Sturdevant south on Sturdevant to Valley Heights Drive and east on Valley Heights Drive to Hank’s house on the left or north side of the road.
- If you wish to participate in the gift exchange at the Christmas Party bring a gift costing no more than $15.

OLD BUSINESS:
- The Train Show:
Our train show was a success. Lauren received many emails indicating several people enjoyed the show. Receipts and expenses for the show were as follows: tables $170, donations $248.50, club table $177.75, other $30; expenses were Grange Hall rental $200, truck rental $219.73, advertising $147.91, flyers $33.95, coffee $10.84, and other $2. Thanks to all those that made the show a success. A special thanks to Loretta Watkins and Murph Gerber for their efforts.
NEW BUSINESS:
- 2009 Train Show:
Next years show is scheduled for October 17 and 18, 2009 at the Grange. Hall rental will be $250. Four ten dollar gift certificates will be included in the prizes.
- It was suggested that we consider having another show earlier next year and that we consider having a website for the club. Chuck Howerton will formulate a website program.
- Discussions have been held to have the modules at the Clallam County Fair August 20-23, 2009.
- Work on the modules needs to smooth out the trackage joints between module sections and to possibly convert to DCC operation.
- Chuck is working with the Boy Scouts on a program to have 8 boys participate in two sessions on railroading to earn merit badges. Plans are to have them visit Dick Wolf and Joe Watkin’s layouts. Each of the scouts will give a 5 minute presentation on their scrapbook and the railroading sessions at the end of the program.
I am sorry to report that one of our members, John Arena, died this past July. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

The meeting was called to order at 3:00PM on September 27, 2008. 12 members present.

TREASURER’S REPORT:
Beginning balance of $932.82 and an ending balance of $829.32. Expenditures to the Pt. Leader for show advertising of $57.00, Peninsula Dailey News of $46.50. No income. We did have a few checks for tables that have not been deposited.
OLD BUSINESS:
- Model Contest:
Due to only 4 present members who noted that they had entries, all prizes were suspended for the contest this year. This was handled via a vote of the members present and it was also decided at the meeting that the models, diorama’s, etc would be displayed at the show and a notice would be placed that a contest would be held at next years show and would include members and non members as well, with prizes awarded.
- Train Show:
October 3rd any one who can help is requested to be at Lincoln School at 11:00 am to move the modules and show prizes, giveaways, signage, etc to the main floor west door so we can load the rental truck. Hank Samson and Lauren Scrafford will get the truck and arrive in PA sometime after noon. The Grange will be available for set up for dealers at 4pm. We will be able to set the modules up between 2 and 2:30. If you can help any time during this time frame it will be helpful. Hopefully we will be out of the Grange before 7 pm.
October 4th Show 10 am to 4 pm. I will be at the Grange at 7 am and dealers can set up until 10 am. Any member is asked to please help with assisting dealers, helping Steve Stripp with the club table, helping Joe run trains. We need your help.
October 5th Sunday 10:00 am to 3 pm. I will be at the Grange to open the doors at 9:30 am. Once again we need members to help tear down everything and help dealers move out so we can get home at a decent hour. Help is needed with moving the modules back to PA.
- Pat Furey and Dick Wolf manned the NOPR table at the River Bridge Audobon Society Festival this past Friday and Saturday. Steve Stripp and Lauren Scrafford helped also. Approximately 100 flyers were handed out for the show.
- I forgot to mention at the meeting that I mailed out over 150 postcards(advertising the show) to individuals who signed up for our mailing list last year. I also sent about the same number of emails with the show flyer attached to individuals who signed up for the email rather than postcard option the last 2 years at the show. If you still have some flyers hit the local business’s.
NEw BUSINESS:
- 2009 Train Show:
Next years train show has been locked in and a deposit made for the weekend of October 17-18th. This is the same weekend we had last year and not a conflict with Lynden nor Vancouver, WA.
- Boy Scout Merit Badge:
A request was made for assistance with the local Boy Scout Railroading Merit Badge program. Chuck Howerton volunteered to put this together. Lauren and Hank volunteered to assist time permitting. Other volunteers would be welcomed.
- Christmas Party:
Last note from the meeting. We need a volunteer to host the Christmas Party in December
- Officers for 2009:
The end of the year is fast approaching and a slate of new officers is needed (at least for the presidents position)..

TREASURER’S REPORT:
Beginning balance $982.82 less $50 to Lauren for picnic supplies leaving a balance of $932.82.
OLD BUSINESS/NEW BUSINESS (it sort of got all intertwined):
- Steve Strippe reported they had a good turnout at the library for the kids. Had about 65 kids and adults.
- 25 attended the Kitsap Live Steamers picnic. Everyone had a good time.
- The Dungeness River Bridge Society will have an event at Railroad Bridge 9/26 and 27 starting at 10am. Two tables will be available for display of railroad and logging items.
- There will be work parties at Lincoln School this month to finish work on the modules in preparation for the swap meet October 4 and 5 at McCleay Hall. Lauren will notify you of the scheduled work dates.
- Anyone wanting tables for the swap meet should pay Pat Fuery for those tables by the next meeting. $15 for members and $25 for non-members. There is no charge for tables used for display only.

TREASURER’S REPORT:
Financial Report $982.82 including $2.00 paid for item by Richard Wolf.
OLD BUSINESS/NEW BUSINESS (it sort of got all intertwined):
- KITSAP LIVE STEAMERS: August 9th 10:30 am to 4 pm at Port Orchard, WA.
Maps were handed out, roster of individuals attending. We still need a final headcount. At this point 22 attending for our summer picnic. If you plan on coming and haven’t contacted Lauren please do. We need side dishes and paper plates. The club will provide brats, hamburgers, buns, utensils and napkins.
- Modules: Next Work Parties are August 8th and August 22nd at Lincoln School in PA. at 9:30 am on those days. All track work has been done. Rewiring is needed which Hank volunteered to do on his own on Wednesdays. Scenery and industries need to be added to a few modules in the next few weeks. I will be in Colorado or preparing to leave and will be unable to attend the August work parties.
- Joe Watkins layout has had the golden spike driven and he is offering an open house on Wednesday August 13th from 10 am to 3 pm. Joe is located near the River Bridge Park in Sequim at 82 Rowland DR. His phone number is 360-681-8539 and email is quiltedcaboose@aol.com
- Sequim Library Presentation: August 6, 2008 Sequim Library 10:30 to 11:30 am. Setup 9:00 am. If you have any giveaways let us know as we expect over 100 to be in attendance.
